Torres probably gets the other 4th/5th OF spot because he can play all 3 OF positions and occasionally leadoff. We all know Rowand is not a leadoff hitter and the Giants need a backup plan and also more speed to be able to come off the bench. Bowker just hasn't shown he can hit for power in the Bigs and his power "potential" is his only real plus attribute.
As for backup IF's, you've got to have Whiteside, Uribe (when Sanchez returns), and Ishi for late innings D replacement and to rake at home. That's all we have room for except someone to take Sanchez's spot for the first 2 weeks. Maybe Bowker gets a look and if he rakes then he replaces Torres or Velez..
The bullpen will be anchored by Wilson, Affeldt, Runzler, Medders and Romo. Then you have to say Wellemeyer will be in long relief and maybe Mota makes the squad to have a veteran in the mix. The starters will clearly be Lincecum, Cain, Zito, Sanchez and Bumgarner is almost a lock IMHO.
Rowand CF (blagh)
Renteria SS (blagh)--until Sanchez returns)
Panda 3B
Huff 1B
DeRosa RF
Molina C
Shierholtz RF
Uribe 2B
3-8 we are definitely improved from last year and 2-8 will look much better if F. Sanchez gets and stays healthy.
