Remember how careful the G's were with Posey? Belt, as talented as he is, isn't even close to as sure a thing as Posey was.
As for his stats, not a day has gone by since his first month in Single A that I didn't check MILB for his stats... mid game. I'm obsessed with the bloke. I have read every article there is to read. I now own 25 of his baseball cards. I get Belt.
That said, the predominant thinking is still that Belt is a year away. Is he an upgrade over Ishi? Of course he is. Is he an upgrade over Ishi right now? Who is to say? He's never hit MLB pitching. Lots of guys are world-beaters in the minors and take quite awhile to develop. If you don't believe me, go say hello to Justin Smoak for me. One of the prominent writer at BA doesn't even think Belt is a top 50 talent. He puts him in the top 100 and thinks he's playing over his head.
If I was the GM, Belt would probably be a September call-up. However, knowing the Giants history, there's also a fair change they wait. I put a call-up at about 25%. Do you really think, knowing Bochy's propensity to ride grizzly veterans until they implode, that they will bring up Belt and he'll see anything more then the occasional substitution or pinch hitter role? I just don't see it. It's not his style. Do I like his style? Not at all.
